Design and Technology: one-year routes (D&T, Engineering, Food)

Design and Technology:

Welcome to your course of study at the SHU Centre for Design and Technology Education

During your time at Sheffield Hallam University, you will be studying Design and Technology Education on either of the following routes, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in Design and Technology. These are:

1 Year PGCE in Secondary Design and Technology

1 Year PGCE in Secondary Design and Technology (Food)

We are very much looking forward to working with you and this document contains some suggestions about how you might prepare yourself for the course before the official start in September.

First, for some general preparation for learning to teach Design and Technology we would like to recommend some reading relevant to teaching the subject in schools, and the development of design and technology as a subject over the past 20 years. The following books provide a good introduction to some of the traditional and contemporary issues and debates. They are intended as a general broad introduction and on the course you will also be encouraged to read texts more focused in your area of study, however it is important to stress that we see the course very much as a ‘Design and Technology’ experience.

Design and Technology is a constantly evolving subject and it is important to understand where we have come from and where we are heading to. We have a thriving community of teachers and we advise you to spend some time looking at the Design and Technology Association website and video channel for ideas and inspiration.

Preliminary Subject Knowledge Audit:

After reading through the curriculum and key specifications above, identify the following:

  • 3 key areas in which you feel confident / have substantial experience.
  • 3 key areas where you feel less confident / lack experience in.

In order to keep up to date with developments in education we recommend that you read the TES (Times Educational Supplement- www.tes.co.uk) and the Guardian Education supplement (www.theguardian.com/education). We also recommend that you regularly read a broadsheet newspaper.

You will be required to complete a more detailed subject knowledge audit at the start of your course.
