What is the Seedcorn funding?

Seedcorn funding applications for 2022/23 were launched at our recent Connecting with Professional Practice Conference 2022.

Applications for the Seedcorn funds are now open to all Hallam academics and postgraduate research students who are collaborating with external partners. The applications will close on 30 June.

There are nine £500 pots available in a competitive bidding process:

  • 5 awards for research-focused proposals
  • 3 awards for employability-focussed proposals
  • 1 award exclusively for postgraduate research student colleagues

Dr Sally Pearse received Seedcorn funding last year…

“The Seedcorn funding acted as a catalyst for us to progress a project that we had discussed but were not sure how to take forward. With the focus of the application and with the attached funding this became a year-long project that enabled early years practitioners to research their own practice. The rich findings from this project are now informing practice development and the findings will be written up for publication.”

Our reflections on the success of the Connecting with Professional Practice Conference 2022.

The two streams of extended campus and the applied university hosted a diverse range of topics at the conference.

These included professional collaborations and support networks, enhancing student employability and wellbeing, undertaking ethnographic research online, and the coaching and leadership experiences of minoritized academics.

What was clear is how important external collaborative relationships are to critical work within higher education.

Special thanks

We would like to thank Maja Robaszkiewicz, Ben Archer, and Zoe Rodgers for their support with the event.

We are grateful to the Social and Economic Research Institute (SERI) for their funding of the five research pots and to Business Engagement Skills and Employability (BESE) for their funding of the three employability pots. Thanks also go to the Health Research Institute (HRI), the Industry and Innovation Research Institute (I2RI), and the Culture and Creativity Research Institute (CCRI) for their collaborative funding of a dedicated Seedcorn fund ringfenced for postgraduate researchers.

“Universities can sometimes be rather closed to other parts of society, when they could instead be central and ‘porous’, welcoming people from different backgrounds, sectors, working cultures bringing skills and ideas in and out of academia in a flexible way.

Hallam does a better job than many in this already and this conference sets a great example. Enabling connectivity and celebrating difference is a fabulous outcome for the ‘pracademia’ community and I am really pleased to add my personal encouragement.”
