These courses support Master’s students undertaking taught courses or independent research and PhD candidates. They provide guidance on how to conduct a literature review and cover the latest trends and developments in research practice, focusing on the practical applications of research methods in the areas of social sciences, arts and humanities and STEM.

This course aims to introduce you to the processes involved in putting together a literature review, so that you are able to undertake your own comprehensive review according to the requirements of your academic project. This course will take around 105 minutes to complete.

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of data collection methods, and to help you evaluate their applicability to your own research project.

Data analysis methods

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of data analysis methods, and to help you evaluate their applicability to your own research project.

This course explores the practical applications of research methods in the arts and humanities. Through examples, scenarios and case studies, it will help you to reflect on the challenges you might face during your research project. This course till take around 58 minutes to complete.

Defining your methodology and designing your research

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of methodological issues, and help you ensure that the research methods you choose fit together in a methodological framework and are aligned with your research question.

Conducting your research

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of research methods, exploring how critical thinking should be employed at all stages of the research process. It will help you evaluate the applicability of the methods to your own research project and consider the best ways to communicate your findings.

This course explores the practical applications of research methods in STEM disciplines. Through practical examples, scenarios and case studies, it will help you to reflect on the challenges you migth face during your research project. This course will take around 60 minutes to complete.

Data collection methods

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of data collection and sampling methods employed in STEM research, as well as issues relating to data management and to assumptions, preferences and bias. It will help you to identify and evaluate the methods and the type and quantity of data appropriate for your own research project.

Data analysis methods

This module is designed to introduce you to a variety of data analysis and presentation methods employed in STEM research. It will help you select and defend methods appropriate for your own research project and consider ethical and legal issues relevant to your research.
