1.  Creating Knowledge Conference – session recordings available

The Creating Knowledge Conference took place from 22 – 25 June this year under the broad theme of Borderless Research.  We’re pleased to say that you can now catch up on any sessions that you missed or want to revisit via the recordings on the CK21 conference site (SHU Google log-in required – you can find further help via these instructions for accessing Google Apps).

There were many fantastic presentations throughout the week so do please take some time to explore the topics that are of most interest to you and feel free to contact the speakers to follow up with any questions (let us know if you’re not sure how to find their email address). Of general interest to this audience could be the Day 3 workshop ‘Journey through a PhD’ (please see the Friday email for the access code) and the Day 4 workshops on ‘Utilising Research for Wider Societal Benefit’ and ‘A practical guide to adapting to remote research’ (please see the Friday email for the access code).

The posters and 3MT videos are also still available on the site as well and we’d really appreciate your feedback on various aspects of the conference to help us plan for next year via our feedback survey.  If you have any queries, please email shard@shu.ac.uk.

2.  Inside Academia – Article Series

Inside Academia aims to instigate meaningful change to the mindsets and mental health of students, researchers and academics, and help create positive change in the culture associated with these factors.  There are a variety of resources on the website including a series of articles looking at various issues affecting these groups.  In the latest article Alex Brown discusses how the pandemic stopped him entering into his dream post-doc, the impact this has had on him and how, through the power of reflection practice, he is trying to learn and grow from his experiences.

You can read the full article on Covid-19 and lessons to be learnt: The Importance of experience – reflection – action

3.  Showcasing the interdisciplinarity of the Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA) community

Sheffield Hallam University is part of three interdisciplinary research programmes in Applied Biosciences for Health; Energy and Social Policy under the Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA) banner.  Last week, several of our researchers participated in the DTA Summer School exploring how their research fits into this interdisciplinary landscape.  This was the first time that the entire DTA network had been brought together to meet, share and learn from each other.  Well done to everyone involved!

4.  BreakThru Research Podcast – Catherine Duckett

Dive into a new way of exploring research!  Listen in, as we discuss the studies taking place at Sheffield Hallam University’s Industry and Innovation Research Institute.  The researchers themselves will be discussing the challenges they face with their research and how they got to where they are today, with  tips on how you could get into their field.

The latest podcast features Dr Catherine Duckett, who is part of the Bioanalytical Research Group in the BMRC.  Catherine’s research is focussed on drug metabolism and analytical procedures used to develop novel pharmacological and biomedical applications with a particular emphasis on ICPMS methodologies including imaging. Tune in to listen about the journey behind her success.

Please get in touch if you would like to highlight or request any specific events, opportunities, or development sessions that might appeal to cross-disciplinary PGR students or supervisors.  We’re always keen to hear about any PGR good news stories that can be shared: doctoralschool@shu.ac.uk  A reminder of upcoming events is available in the doctoral school calendar: https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/doctoralschool/events/

We are all aware that the situation with restrictions and social distancing has changed considerably since Monday 19 July, but it is very important for us to continue to be mindful of the safety protocols that we’ve been following for so many months in order to help to keep the numbers of cases down.  It is also as important as ever for us to look after our physical and mental health, and each other.  As always you can find help and information about supporting your wellbeing via the University website on https://www.shu.ac.uk/wellbeing

Best wishes

Nicola, Elizabeth and Liz
