RSP: Managing the Supervisor/Supervisor Partnership- EVENT POSTPONED

11 January 2023 @ 14:00 - 16:00

At SHU we carry out PGR supervision in teams.  This can enhance the experience of doctoral candidates by reducing their reliance upon a single individual.  It can give students access to a broader range of expertise and support.  It can also provide on-the-job peer support to supervisors.  However, the involvement of more than one supervisor in the doctoral supervision process can create a potential for conflict and can negatively impact on the experience of the student.  There is a need to recognise Supervisor:Supervisor relationships as part of doctoral supervision practice. In this session we will highlight the value of:

  • Clarifying roles with co-supervisors and students at the start of the project (and as the project progresses).
  • Clarifying expectations of the project with co-supervisors and the student.
  • Regularly reviewing relations between supervisors and with students during the course of the candidacy.

We will draw on supervisor and doctoral programmes management perspectives to help you to identify effective practices and behaviours for managing the supervisor/supervisor partnership.  The session aligns with the UKCGE Good Practice Framework
