SHU Progress supports you as an applicant, once you formally enrol at Sheffield Hallam University you will become a student and be supported by new teams.

There are a wide range of services, which can help you as a student, you may be familiar with some of Sheffield Hallam’s support services from attending SHU Progress events or reading our updates.

Below we’ve provided an overview of the range of support available.

MyHallam and Hallam Help

MyHallam is full of useful information, hints, tips and has answers to many frequently asked questions.

If MyHallam does not answer your question you can contact Hallam Help – if they cannot support you, they can help you reach other services which can.

Advisers
Hallam Help Advisers

As a student you will have three individual advisers, with different specialisms:

  • Academic Adviser – to support you with your studies
  • Student Support Adviser – to support you pastorally
  • Employability Adviser – to support you with your career planning

When you start at Sheffield Hallam, you will be made aware of who your advisers are and how to reach them. You can read more here.

As part of being on SHU Progress we can pass information about your circumstances on to your Academic Adviser.  It is entirely up to you if you’d like us to do this and you will be sent a form to complete, shortly before starting at Hallam, which will ask if you’d like any information passed on to your Academic Adviser and if you do what information you’d like to share.

Specialist Student Support

Additional support for care experienced, care leavers, carers and estranged students

If you were being supported by SHU Progress as a care experienced student, care leaver, carer or estranged student you will have new named contacts: Emily Marsh, Robin Kerr and Kate Wilkinson.

SHU Progress will pass your contact details onto Emily, Robin and Kate who will be in touch before you enrol.

The support Emily, Robin and Kate can offer includes:

  • offering support, information, advice and guidance throughout your time on your course, this can include having individual appointments with them
  • providing regular updates including a monthly newsletter and a Facebook group to connect with peers
  • access to specialist support services e.g. careers and employability, wellbeing, student funding
  • access to financial support at SHU
  • promoting events and activities

If you have caring responsibilities for a family member or friend we appreciate that you might face distinct challenges.  Staff will be understanding and sensitive towards your circumstances, with opportunities to manage your time flexibly around your caring responsibilities.

Additional support for students from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds

We encourage you to join Sheffield Hallam University’s fantastic mentoring programme called Culture Connect. If you take part, you will be matched to an experienced undergraduate for a semester, who will guide you through University processes and life as a student in Sheffield. Helen Paskins from the International Experience Team is a specialist adviser for students from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds. Helen will email you at the beginning of your course to welcome you.

Financial Support

As a student at SHU you may be eligible for additional financial support. You can only apply for this after you have started at Sheffield Hallam University so keep checking MyHallam and your student email address for updates.
