Careers and Employability Support

As a SHU Progress member, you can access Careers and Employability support from our expert advisers.

Careers and Employability Advice

Our Employability Advisers can help with any general questions about careers and work experience.  You can talk to them if you want help with CVs, applications and interviews, or to know more about the support available for finding short placements, sandwich placements, part-time jobs and how work experience during your degree can help you succeed in your academic study and in your next steps.

Careers and Employability Guidance

Not sure what you’re doing? Guidance appointments with our Senior Employability Advisers are there to help you make big decisions. If you can’t choose between courses, or want to have a clear plan for what happens after graduation, book into a Guidance appointment.

Speak to a member of the SHU Progress team for help arranging an appointment.

Job Opportunities

You may want to work part time whilst studying in order to support living costs, and to improve your employability and enhance your CV ready for when you graduate and begin looking for work. It’s also a great way to try out different roles to help decide what you might want to do in the future.

Take a look at Sheffield Hallam’s ‘Part-time and Campus Jobs’ page for ideas on finding work.

This includes further information on Handshake, Hallam’s Careers and Employability platform. As a SHU student you will automatically have a profile. Campus jobs such as Student Ambassador roles are listed, as well as opportunities with employers who have relationships with Hallam and are looking for SHU students to fill the role. You can also explore Career Fairs and workshops.

Becoming a Student Ambassador

This means you can tailor your work to support your aspirations.

Student Ambassador roles can also be rewarding and lead to making a real difference! Working at the likes of open days or campus tours, you’ll be a role model to people thinking about coming to study at SHU.

Once you start university, with recently being at the same stage of education, you are ideally placed to give support and guidance! It may be that you are able to help breakdown concerns about university for prospective students from a diverse background who may feel like university is out of their reach.

If you would be interested in providing guidance to people from a similar background to you once you start at SHU, the SHU Progress team are always happy to discuss opportunities.
