We understand that applying to university can be a stressful and nerve-wracking time for everyone involved. Sometimes things don’t go to plan, and you could find that your initial applications are unsuccessful, or you have missed your offer on results day. On this page, we’ll talk you through the different options available to make sure you feel prepared to navigate next steps.

UCAS Extra

If you used all five of your choices on your original application and you’re not holding an offer, you’ll be able to add another choice using UCAS Extra. If you use Extra to add another choice you cannot reverse this to go back to your original five choices.

This year UCAS Extra will be open between 28th February and 4th July 2024.

Results Day

We know that results day can feel like a stressful and nerve wracking time for many. However, in most instances, we receive your results before your do and will aim to send our decision to the UCAS Hub so you will know whether or not your place at university has been confirmed.

If you receive your results before 15 August, send them to admissions-results@shu.ac.uk with subject line ‘Results’.

If you don’t get the grades in your offer, it doesn’t always mean you will not get in. We might still offer you a place, or make you an offer for a different course.  If we offer you an alternative course, you will see this on the UCAS Hub and you will have 5 days to accept the offer on the UCAS Hub.  If you don’t accept it within 5 days, it will be automatically declined on your behalf.  Alternatively, if you think there is evidence we have made a mistake, you can appeal against our decision

This year results day will take place on the 15th August 2024.

Clearing

If we don’t offer you a place, you can still apply through clearing for a different course.

What is clearing? This is where universities with spaces still on their courses will advertise them. You can take a look at this page by UCAS that breaks down Clearing, as well as the best way to navigate the process.

Retaking Qualifications

If you didn’t get the grades you wanted/needed, there is also the option to retake qualifications or study qualifications to get extra UCAS points, and then apply to Sheffield Hallam for next September. SHU Progress can support you with your new application, so please let us know if you want to continue being a SHU Progress member.

Deferrals or Course Change

If you already have a place with us, you don’t have to enter clearing if you want to be considered for a different course with us.  You just need to email your request for us to consider it. To request a deferral or change of course, email us at coursechangerequest@shu.ac.uk, putting ‘Defer’ or ‘Change of course’ in the subject line, and including your: full name, date of birth, UCAS ID number, course details. We can’t promise to offer you a deferral or course change, but we will consider the request and email you when we have made a decision.
