Support for carers

If you are a carer, you may worry about the thought of being away from the person you care for. You need to study in the place that is right for you, whether it is close to home or further afield. The following steps might help you make this decision:

  • Understanding the support you can receive as a carer from the university including financial support to help with the costs of travelling home unexpectedly or flexibility in teaching, learning and assessments
  • Contacting your local council to request a carers assessment so they know your home situation is changing and can check your family are getting the right support so you can study
  • Contacting your local carers service for advice
Mature student friendly accommodation

If you are a mature student there are a range of options for you. You can request to be allocated a flat with other mature students, a self-contained flat or a private sector house with your partner or family.

Whichever option you choose, you can apply online through our accommodation website.

Disabled students – Adapted accommodation

Sheffield Hallam offers adapted accommodation, such as larger rooms suitable for keeping equipment in, wheelchair access, rooms for carers, personal assistants and support workers, and reasonable adaptations where needed. When using our accommodation search webpage you can filter to view wheelchair accessible accommodation by clicking the tickbox.

When you apply for accommodation you will be asked if you have a medical condition or disability which requires special consideration when being allocated a room. If this applies to you, please declare it in your accommodation application form and complete the notes field to provide details of your condition, how this may affect your room allocation and highlight any specific requirements.

After applying for accommodation, you may receive an additional form to complete if we need further details about your circumstances – for example you may require:

  • level access to a wet room (wheelchair friendly)
  • emergency evacuation facilities (vibrating pillow or flashing fire alarm alerter)
  • shower chair
  • grab rails
  • assistance animals

The accommodation application form will allow you to outline your needs in greater detail to ensure that your individual requirements are fully understood, and that the accommodation offered is suitable.

You can find more information on adapted accommodation here.
