Sheffield Hallam University is perfectly located for students who commute as we are very close to the bus station, train station and tram stops. As a student you can also access discounted bus fares and tram tickets. You may also be eligible for a rail card to get discounted train travel (some student bank accounts provide a rail card for free which may be worth considering before purchasing one).

When choosing to commute you may wish to consider:

  • the cost of the journey
  • the length of the journey
  • the frequency of transport
  • the running times of transport; can you get to university for a 9am start? can you get home if you stay late to study or socialise?

You can plan your journey using the Travel South Yorkshire Journey Planner and you may wish to consider different options and the time v. cost benefits. If you are looking to travel frequently by bus into university, it would be a good idea to download the First Bus App to your phone. The app allows you to purchase advanced e-tickets instantly and plan your journey.

City Campus

The map below shows potential trains you could get to arrive for a 10am lecture or seminar:

Collegiate Campus

Collegiate Campus is just outside the city centre but very easy to commute to from our City Campus. You can walk there in 20-30 minutes, cycle in 10 minutes or take a bus. Parking is very limited, so it is recommended that you park in the city centre and travel from there.

A significant number of SHU students commute from Sheffield and the surrounding areas, so you will not be the only one commuting. There is a Facebook group to help you meet other students who commute.

You can view a video about commuting to and from Sheffield Hallam University.

More information on getting between our campuses can be found on our website.

There is travel support for students within Sheffield including reduced student bus tickets and reduced train travel (by purchasing a 16-25 Railcard – more information can be found on the 16-25 Railcard website).

Sheffield Hallam has disabled parking bays on campus that can be used if you have a University Parking Permit. More information about this can be found on our website

Commuting to a Placement

You may be studying a course which requires you to travel to a work placement. If you are studying a Health and Social Care course you may be eligible to have some of your placement travel costs reimbursed from the NHS Learning Support Fund. Also, if you opt to temporarily live elsewhere to travel to and from your placement more easily, you may also be eligible to have some of your dual accommodation costs reimbursed. Both payments come from the Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses. *

You can read more about this on the NHS Learning Support Fund website.

* Please note – It cannot be guaranteed this programme will be running when you start University in September 2024, or that the criteria will remain the same.
