Finding your way around the software

The basic suite of software such as Microsoft Office is installed on your PC and you can access it from the start menu as before. Additional software could be installed, depending on the requirements for Teaching and Learning for individual workstations. We would suggest you use the Cortana search feature for easily finding the software you require.

AppsAnywhere

The AppsAnywhere service is available and has the same software as available within the Windows 7 Managed Desktop. This is available as a desktop shortcut.

Most of the software that you require will be available within AppsAnywhere so this is the first place you should look for your software.

To find software in AppsAnywhere we would suggest you use the search facility.

Start Menu

The Windows 10 Start Menu is very different to the Windows 7 Start Menu. With Windows 7 we could have folders and sub folders making it possible to group applications together by type of application, Faculty or Department.

Windows 10 doesn’t support sub folders so for Windows 10 all the applications will be in a folder at the top of the menu structure named “! SHU Apps”.

There will be some software installed on the workstation that isn’t available in AppsAnywhere, such as Microsoft Office, Chrome, Notepad and vWorkspace.

In order to find locally installed software we would recommend you use the Cortana Search facility .

The start menu folder is currently being updated with new items.

Software Center

The Windows 10 Managed Desktop can allow staff to install applications assigned to themselves of their workstation via the Software Center which in on the Start Menu.

The is more information about the Software Center here.

Microsoft Store for Education

Sheffield Hallam University has implemented the Microsoft for Education. This allows us to deliver ‘Modern Apps’ to workstations via the Store.

If you use additional software which you can’t see in these places, you should contact IT Help.
