All universities exist, more than anything else, for their students.  The hard work of a university is the consistent effort, day-in, day-out to secure student success through exceptional teaching and student support.   Sheffield Hallam has understood this for some time, and the teaching, student support and research supervision awards have now run successfully for eight years, becoming a highlight of the University calendar and a part of the fabric of the institution.  The pictures in the main University entrance remind students, staff and visitors alike of our commitment to, and our success in, teaching and student support.  It is an enormous pleasure to be able to publish the names of this year’s award winners.

The central element of the scheme is student involvement in nomination and assessment.  Students were asked through a university survey to nominate academic or student support staff who had inspired them or had a transformative impact on their student experience, inside or outside the curriculum.  A total of 2597 nominations were received and 1097 individual staff and teams, academics and student support staff were named.

This was the first stage of the selection process.  The second stage took place in Faculties and Directorates.  Each nomination was put before a selection panel, which included a student representative to maintain the student voice within the selection process.  The panel used a standard set of criteria to assess the nominations.

Fifty-five members of academic and support staff were awarded Faculty and Directorate Awards.  All of these went forward to the University stage from which nineteen University Inspirational Teaching Awards and four awards for Outstanding Student Support were made.

A similar process took place for research supervisors, where students were asked through a university survey to nominate a research supervisor who had inspired them and provided exceptional support.  A total of 122 staff nominations were considered by a University panel and five Inspirational Research Supervisor Awards were made.

Inspirational Teaching Awards are also made to recognise the valuable contribution of teaching staff at some of our overseas partner institutions, and University staff who teach on overseas partner courses.  A total of 413 nominations were received nominating 94 individual staff across six overseas partners (Botswana Accountancy College, INTI and TAR UC in Malaysia, SCOPE and SHAPE in Hong Kong and Sino-British College in China).  These were considered by a University panel and seven Inspirational Teaching Awards were made.

The following staff have received University awards:

I’d like to congratulate all the nominees, all the award winners and all the staff who were successfully nominated for a University award.  I think this is a fantastic scheme and I’m full of admiration for all the nominees.  It’s a tribute to the University that we have so many students who identify so many staff as being inspiring, transformational and supportive.
