‘Translation and Stylistic Variation’ – Professor John Goodby speaks at British Centre for Literary Translation research seminar

On Wednesday 15 November Professor John Goodby was one of two experts on Irish poetry and poetry translation, together with Dr Francis Jones of Newcastle University, invited to speak at a research seminar in the series run by the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) at UEA; this event centred on the launch of Helen Gibson’s book on translations by Irish poets, entitled ‘Translation and Stylistic Variation: Dialect and Heteroglossia in Northern Irish Poetic Translation‘. John Goodby is Professor of Arts & Culture at Sheffield Hallam University. Professor Goodby’s research specialisms are Irish writing, Welsh poetry, and British / US poetry, especially modernist poetry. Professor Goodby is the leading authority on the work of Dylan Thomas and the author / editor of five books on the subject; in this capacity Professor Goodby has worked with – and as a consultant to – the BBC, the Arts Council, the National Trust, Aardman Films, the OU, the British Library, & British Council.
