The Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF) is a professional development framework for researchers.  It describes the knowledge, behaviours and attributes of successful researchers and can be used by individual researchers at all stages of their career.

At Sheffield Hallam University we have acquired licences for all doctoral researchers for an online system called the RDF Planner.  The RDF Planner helps doctoral researchers undertake a skills audit against 63 criteria, which capture the characteristics of excellent researchers.  This enables identification of areas of strength and those in need of development and is a requirement of the RF1 (or equivalent) process.

All new doctoral students should now have been set up with an RDF Planner account.  If not, you can request one by emailing doctoralschool@shu.ac.uk

For 2017-18 we are running 2 different types of training session and you are welcome to book on either or both depending on your needs:

  1. Professional Development Planning using the Vitae RDF. A classroom session designed to introduce researchers to the importance of Professional Development Planning and how you can use the RDF to analyse your development needs.
  2. Vitae RDF Planner practical drop-in. A practical session focusing on the RDF Planner online tool and an opportunity to get started on your Development Needs Analysis and to ask questions.
