  1. Prof Christine Le Maitre – Highly Commended at the THE Awards

Many congratulations to Prof Christine Le Maitre of HWLS who was “Highly Commended” in the Outstanding Supervisor of the Year category at the THE Awards last night.  The judges particularly highlighted the strong impact of her supervisory work.  It is great to see Christine achieve national recognition at such a prestigious event.  For a 15 minute video interview of Christine reflecting on her supervisory practice for UKCGE, follow this link Reflecting on Supervisory Practice with Professor Christine Le Maitre & Professor Doug Cleaver – YouTube

2. PGR Society – Upcoming Events in December

  • Focus Thursdays

From next week (3 Dec) the sessions will run on alternating weekly Morning and Afternoon Focus Thursday sessions so that more students have the opportunity to join the event!

Thursday 3 Dec:  Morning 0930-1130  |  Thursday 10 Dec: Afternoon  1430 – 1630

This weekly virtual study session is your constant in the chaos known as 2020.  Focus Thursday is like a Shut Up and Write session, but with less of a focus on writing and more focus on just getting whatever you need to get done, done!  We will work in 30 min sessions with 5 minute breaks in between for chats, drinks, and loo-breaks.  The Zoom forum is great both for ensuring that you work in the work sessions and have some chats in between, or get up and get some coffee or tea.  Focus Thursday will run weekly, join in as when you can! (sneaking in mid-session is fine too!).

Check your society email for the zoom link.

  • Christmas Craft Along

Wednesday 2 December | 1700-1800

Bring a hot choc or some mulled wine, and your paper, glue, scissors, tape, whatever!  We can keep each other company while making some festive decorations.  To give you some inspo we’ve put together a Pinterest board!  You can ‘buy’ a free ticket for this event via the society homepage or just join in on the evening 🙂

Check your society email for the zoom link.

  •  PodClub voting (next PodClub on Monday 7 Dec 1830 – 1930)

Help to decide which podcast episode to listen to before discussing at the next PodClub – the choices are:

Preternatural Investigations Episode 8:  Weirdness Without, Weirdness Within
In which the ways the communities we belong to are shown to affect our sense of self and our ability to find magic, meaning and happiness in our own lives.  Differences between narrow communities and those that are more open, welcoming and diverse are looked at and what makes us who we are is shown to involve more than the factual aspects of our identity – the self is shown to be preternatural.

No Such Thing As A Fish Episode 23:  No Such Thing As A Yawning Psychopath
“No Such Thing As A Fish” is a weekly podcast where 4 of the QI elves talk about interesting facts they’ve discovered that week, and there’s plenty of accompanying facts and digressions to go along with it.  This episode asks important questions such as: “Should beards be banned?”, “How contagious is yawning?”, “How loud was the big bang?” and “How much was the computer with the only existing version of Toy Story 2 worth?”

 3. PubhD – 16 December 2020  | 1900- 2130

PubhD offers students in Sheffield an opportunity to try their hands at public engagement by explaining their PhDs in 10 minutes and facing questions from a varied and diverse audience.

There’s no boring Powerpoints here, just words and a flipchart.  Whilst the organisers would normally invite you to the pub, they’ve moved online for obvious reasons.  So why not join them at 7pm on Wednesday 16 December via Google Hangouts, from the comfort of your own couch, drink in hand, ready to learn.

For more information, check out their website and social media via the following links:

You can book your place on the PubhD Booking Link
