1. Doctoral Supervisor Forum for staff – 1 July 2020 | 1000 – 1100 via Zoom
Our third scheduled Supervisor Forum of 2020 focuses on the wellbeing of PGR supervisors. We’ll be specifically focusing on three themes:
• Self-care strategies for stressed out supervisors
• Having courageous conversations
• Negotiating and navigating boundaries when supporting the wellbeing of your PGR students
The session is hosted by Márjory Da Costa-Abreu (PhD, SFHEA), Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Sheffield Hallam University, with experience in Student/Supervisor Wellbeing and Teaching/Learning Quality at Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) and supported by Nicola Palmer, experienced research supervisor and Head of Doctoral Training at SHU. We invite all SHU PGR supervisors to come along, join the discussion, ask questions and share experiences.

2. Athena Swan Lecture – Tuesday 7 July 2020 | 1000 – 1100 via Zoom
“Girls wear pink and boys wear blue: exploring the relationship between society stereotypes and the gender gap in science”
An Athena SWAN lecture by Dr Márjory da Costa-Abreu (Sheffield Hallam University, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science for Games & AI)
Have you ever heard that there is not such a thing as gender gap? Do you believe that girls are more likely to seek ‘caring careers’ and boys are more likely to seek ‘engineering careers’ because of a ‘natural disposition’? Do you think that girls like pink and boys like blue because of genetics?
Well… Come to this talk and explore the gender gap, unconscious bias behaviour, women’s reality in life and in the work environment, and the reasons there are so few women in science.

3. Creating Knowledge Conference – 9-12 June 2020
We’ve just recovered from 4 days of conferencing and want to thank everyone who supported us to deliver CK20 online. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Thanks to the organising committee, session chairs, presenters and attendees. Well done to all our entrants for the 3MT competition and congratulations to our 3MT winner Amie Woodward.

4. Doctoral School Drop-In Sessions for Professional Development Training Queries
The Doctoral School team are temporarily pausing the drop in sessions, but they will resume again from Monday 13 July on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.30-10.00.
The drop-ins are there for researchers to ask questions about professional development including the Researcher Development Framework (RDF), online training and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) staff network. It’s a chance to ask questions and chat to someone face to face – rather than just sending an email.
