1. Volunteers sought for Code First Girls scheme
Code First Girls (CFG) are dedicated to transforming technology by providing the skills, space and inspiration for women to become developers and future leaders. They run free coding courses all over the UK and Ireland to help women kick-start their career in tech. CFG is running two courses at Sheffield Hallam University but needs your help!
They are looking for volunteer instructors to donate their time and share their tech skills to teach the CFG Introduction to Web Development or Introduction to Python Programming curricula. Are you a current student (undergrad or postgrad) with front-web development (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) or Python knowledge? If yes, you can build your CV and gain invaluable experience by signing up to be a CFG instructor.
There is no lesson planning or homework marking involved and the course materials have already been created, we just ask you to bring your enthusiasm to each session to inspire more women to explore a career in tech! Sign up to be an instructor today by visiting this link.
CFG courses run for 8 weeks, one evening a week for two hours, on a Monday – Thursday (exact dates TBC).

- Call for Abstracts for the Creating Knowledge Conference 2020
Building on the success of 2019, the University Creating Knowledge Conference will take place this year on Tuesday 9 June 2020 at City Campus. It will provide an opportunity for our researchers to present their work associated with the Creating Knowledge research and impact platforms
- Future Economies
- Healthy, Independent Lives
- Thriving, Inclusive Communities
There will be ample opportunity to explore the potential internal and external collaborations offered by the platforms and how they can be realised. The conference is open to all staff and doctoral students; so, whether you’re already an established researcher, an early career researcher, your work supports research or you would like to get into research but aren’t sure how, please do join us. The day will also include a range of other activities intended to celebrate and showcase research at SHU. Further details on these will follow along with the invitation to register.
Presentations and abstract submission
Abstracts for 5 minute ‘lightning’ oral presentations are invited from all staff and doctoral students (there will not be a poster session this year). Presentations should be pitched at the level of a generalist academic audience.
Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and should be submitted using this form before 23:59 on Tuesday 24 March 2020.
A programme committee will be convened and chaired by Dr Nicola Palmer, Head of Doctoral Training. The group will review the abstracts and make the selection for inclusion in the programme.
Queries may be directed to Sheffield Hallam Researcher Development via shard@shu.ac.uk
