Supporting Self and Others: Mental Health and Well-Being
19 January 2018 @ 10:00 - 16:00
Why is this session being held?
Mental health and well-being can sometimes feel like daunting subjects to talk about in a group. We know as a society there is still considerable stigma around mental health which can make this subject feel even harder to talk about.
This makes it even more important that we do talk about this subject and come together to break the silence and stigma.
This session is designed to benefit everyone – whether you have considerable knowledge and experience around mental health or whether you have not really thought about this before.
What is this session about?
This session allow you to explore your understanding of mental health and well-being in a supportive, safe environment.
Some key topics we will explore include:
– Understanding mental health, well-being and self-care
– Common mental health problems
– Practical tips and techniques of how to look after yourself in terms of reducing anxiety, coping with stress and improving sleep
– Challenging unhelpful thoughts and negative ‘cycles’
– Sources of support – from helpful services within and outside of the university to useful apps and self-help tools.
Whilst we hope that you might feel comfortable to, you will not be expected to share from your personal experience unless you would like to.
What benefits might there be?
You can use this increased awareness and knowledge of mental health and well-being to better support yourself – or to support others around you including friends, family and peers. We hope that you will find this session engaging and stimulating and will come away with lots of ideas! Remember that simply by attending this session you are showing a willingness to engage with this topic, valuing it as important and this alone helps to #breakthestigma
