The first in the series will focus on how you can support doctoral researchers with professional skills development and have effective conversations about their professional development plans.
The A, B, C, D of Researcher Development: Supporting research students with Professional Development Planning
Wednesday 12 December 2018 | 12:00 – 13:30 | Surrey 5520
At a time of year when first year doctoral students are coming to you with their Researcher Development Framework (RDF) action plans for RF1 and those further on in their doctorate are reviewing their progress and setting new actions, do you feel confident in having conversations about their broader professional skills development?
We know from the Postgraduate Researcher Experience Survey 2018 that help from supervisors in identifying their training and development needs as a researcher is an area that could be improved.
In this informal, discursive session we will:
- give a brief overview of the Vitae Researcher Development Framework and the online planner that doctoral students are expected to use throughout their research degrees
- discuss the benefits and challenges of effective conversations about professional skills development
- share supervisor experiences of engagement with the professional skills development of research degree students and establish what further support you might find useful
Future Doctoral School supervisor forum themes include:
- supervising different types of doctorates
- styles of supervision
- supporting student wellbeing
- thesis completion plans
Please let us know if you have any other suggestions.
