Structuring Your Writing

23 November 2021 @ 14:00 - 16:00

Structuring your dissertation, chapters and paragraphs is one of the hardest problems for many PhD students. Having worked long and hard to develop a holistic understanding of your topic in which everything is connected to everything else, you will be faced with the requirement to present your findings and argument in linear form, with one sentence / paragraph / chapter following another. The process of writing almost constantly involves making decisions about what goes where, how to avoid repetition and how to help the reader follow your argument.

This workshop will help you develop strategies to structure your writing and allow you to discuss challenges you face. Our background is in the Humanities (English Literature and History) and we expect that it will be of most benefit to students in the Humanities or other qualitative disciplines.

Before attending the session, it would be useful for you to think about any questions you have about structuring your chapters, conference papers, dissertation, etc.

The session is primarily aimed at PhD students with some experience in writing longer texts (including MA dissertations) in the Humanities and neighbouring qualitative disciplines.

The session will run via Zoom on https://shu.zoom.us/j/9983659984 but will not be recorded.

If you would like to attend please e-mail n.p.petersson@shu.ac.uk so that we can keep track of numbers.
