RSP: Building and Managing Relationships with Candidates – PLUS Introduction to the Research Passport Scheme (RSP)
14 December 2022 @ 14:00 - 16:00
The quality of your relationship with doctoral candidates can be crucial to the progress of doctoral projects. There are some common student: supervisor relationship issues for doctoral supervisors in all disciplines. In this session, we will highlight:
- the increased diversity of the doctoral candidate population and recognise its implications for supervision
- the importance of agreeing expectations with candidates at the start of their studies
- the relevance and importance of supervisory styles and their relationship to student needs
- how student needs change over the course of doctoral studies
- institutional policies and procedures in the event of the breakdown of a supervisory relationship and of sources of support for both parties.
We will draw on student and doctoral programmes management perspectives to help you to identify effective practices and behaviours for building and managing relationships with doctoral candidates. The session aligns with the UKCGE Good Practice Framework
