Let’s Talk about Managing Supervisory Relationships

13 November 2020 @ 10:00 - 12:00

Following on from our Induction/Welcome session, the Ethics briefing and the Researcher Development session, we’d now like to invite you to the fourth session in the series.

The quality of your relationship with your supervisor or supervisors can be crucial to the progress of your doctorate.  There are some common student: supervisor relationship issues for doctoral students in all disciplines.  In this session, we will draw on scenarios to stimulate discussion and signpost to a range of resources to support the management of the supervisory relationship.  We will offer supervisor and doctoral programmes management perspectives to help you to identify effective practices and behaviours for managing supervisory relationships.

There is a pre-task for this event: You are asked to watch the ‘Good Supervision’ video (via the Research Degrees Blackboard site – Doctoral Training – Online Training and Resources – Videos – Good Supervision) before you attend the session.

The video is intended to “help students understand what they should expect from supervisors, and can help supervisors understand their role”. We would like you to reflect on the content of the video in terms of its intention.

  • What behaviours in the acted out supervision meeting do you perceive as ‘good’?
  • Should you think of your supervisor as your teacher, your friend, an authority figure?

As part of the online EPIGEUM ‘Transferable Skills’ module, the course ‘Working with your supervisor’ is available to supplement this focus on managing your supervisor (via the Research Degrees Blackboard site – Doctoral Training – Online Training and Resources)

This session is open to all SHU Doctoral Students at any level of study but will be particularly useful for new doctoral researchers.  It will be led by Professor Doug Cleaver / Dr Nicola Palmer from the Doctoral School Team and Professor Lisa Hopkins from SERI with input from SHU Postgraduate Research Tutors in a range of subject areas.

This session is for doctoral students only and not open to supervisors.  Separate training is offered to supervisors as part of the Supervisor Development Course and in other bespoke sessions.  Please see the doctoral training part of the Doctoral School Blog site.
