Introduction to Social Media Analysis – Workshop (Researcher-led Activity)

The workshop focuses on teaching researchers from any discipline on how to apply essential digital methods to analyse the data derived from social media. To better understand contemporary society, social media has become an important area of interest, raising imperative questions across all disciplines.
The aim of the workshop is to give students a theoretical and methodological grounding in this field. The workshop will introduce students into the fundamentals of social media with a focus on Twitter, alongside this demonstrating the importance of using it in research and the ethical issues surrounding it. Moreover, it will explain why Twitter is a popular choice amongst the research community and outline the importance of applying ethics to your social media research.
The anticipated outcomes of the workshop are as follows:
- Outline the fundamentals of social media analysis in research
- Access social media data and understand the ethical implications of doing this
- Apply data analysis methods to recognise and explain the significance of patterns in social data
- Create data visualisations and use them to identify features of social media data
- Identifying data analysis techniques in extraction, manipulation and visualisation of the data
The workshop aims to target doctoral students within Sheffield Hallam University community. Computers are available in the lab, but you’re welcome to work on your own laptop. Handouts will be provided and also materials will be made available via Google, which is the platform being used for the event.
