Induction Series: Working With Your Supervisors

March 6 @ 10:00 - 12:00

We will be running a series of online induction events for new PGR students beginning their studies from February 2024.  These events are also open to students who may not have attended them previously during their induction. Please complete the booking form to secure your place at these sessions.  If you have any queries, please contact the RIDA team on rida@shu.ac.uk

The quality of your relationship with your supervisor or supervisors can be crucial to the progress of your doctorate. There are some common student: supervisor relationship issues for doctoral students in all disciplines.

There is a pre-task for this event: You are asked to watch the ‘Good Supervision’ video (via the Research Degrees Blackboard organisation site. This is accessed via the left hand menu within the folder Doctoral Skills Training – Online Training and Resources for PGR students and staff – Videos – Good Supervision) before you attend the session.

The video is intended to “help students understand what they should expect from supervisors, and can help supervisors understand their role”. We would like you to reflect on the content of the video in terms of its intention.

· What behaviours in the acted out supervision meeting do you perceive as ‘good’?

· Should you think of your supervisor as your teacher, your friend, an authority figure?

As part of the online EPIGEUM ‘Becoming A Researcher’ module, the course ‘Working with your supervisor’ is available to supplement this focus on managing your supervisor (via the Research Degrees Blackboard site – Doctoral Training – Online Training and Resources)
