HRI Methodology Seminar Series
February 20 @ 14:00 - 15:00
Speakers: Marjory Da Costa Abreu and Cavan Aulton
Seminar Title: Basics of AI applied in health data with a focus on machine learning & Optimising the use of Machine Learning and Computer Vision in Sport: An Ecological Dynamics perspective.
Márjory Da Costa-Abreu is currently a Senior Lecturer in Ethical Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computing at Sheffield Hallam University (UK). Her academic vision revolves around enabling a technologically advanced society where Artificial Intelligence is designed and deployed ethically, fostering social equity and the empowerment of marginalised communities.
Her main area of research is ethical artificial intelligence which focus on creating models without using opaque boxes in several application areas such as health, forensics, higher education, hate speech/fake news and biometrics.
She has over 70 scientific papers and has supervised over 20 Research students. She is also on the editorial board of the IET Biometrics journal and the Pattern Analysis and Applications journal.Márjory is a FEMINIST and an activist for women in science. https://www.shu.ac.uk/about-us/our-people/staff-profiles/marjory-da-costa-abreu
The outline of this seminar is to give an overview of what Artificial Intelligence is and the role it play in Digital Health:The topics covered will be:
- Understanding a computer system
- Difference of algorithms, automation and AI
- Is AI and machine learning the same thing?
- Machine learning and Health data: What is the deal?
Cavan Aulton is a PhD candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Sports Engineering Research Group and has a varied background in sports science with applied experience in performance analysis in strength and conditioning. Cavan joined Sheffield Hallam University as an undergraduate student in 2018 in Sports and Exercise Science and has a MSc in applied sports science, the focus of his PhD is optimising the use of machine learning and computer vision in sport.
In 2023, Cavan was invited to present at the European College of Sports Science conference and is currently collaborating with the University of Birmingham in validating the use of Human Pose Estimation to assess sit and reach tests in a home environment. His research ethos is centred around improving athlete development programs and enhancing practitioners using machine learning and computer vision technology.
This symposium will discuss the following:
- What is machine learning and computer vision?
- What are its current and potential applications in sport?
- How can Ecological Dynamics and a Department of Methodology support its application?
- How could this methodology look in future practice?
