Academic English for Doctoral Students

The Academic English for Doctoral Student sessions run as part of the University English Scheme.
Sessions will run for 10 weeks in the first and second semesters on Thursdays from 1000 – 1130 starting on Thursday 1 February 2024 for 10 weeks and will be led by Dr Karen Nicholls via Zoom.

The set of 10 sessions will help you to recognise and build the academic language that you need for study at Doctorate level.
Academic English for your PhD / Doctorate provisional plan – may be adapted according to the needs of the group.
Each week there will be 1 hour to discussing the themes below, then 30 minutes to discuss questions that you bring.
1 Different research genres – 1 Presentations and preparing for questions
2 Presentation practice – developing your own language bank (corpus)
3 Definitions
4 Creating and occupying the niche
5 Commenting on data (figures and tables)
6 Different reasons for using citations
7 Making your ideas sound tentative or strong (hedging and boosting)
8 Writing from the general to the specific or specific to general
9 Developing an academic register
10 Editing and proofreading
