Peter Spence is invited speaker at The 12th Asian Conference on Media, Communication & Film (MediAsia2021) in Kyoto, Japan
Peter Spence will deliver his paper ‘Re-considering History and Narrative Through the Short Factual Film The Archive (UK 2018)’ via live stream at the The 12th Asian Conference on Media, Communication & Film (MediAsia2021) in Kyoto, Japan in November.
The paper reflects on tensions and dialogues between historical enquiry and narrative story-telling, using the case study of the short documentary film The Archive (2018). It asks the question: can a factual film that mediates the past through a model for genre narrative story-telling also offer new understanding of US cold-war history? Furthermore, the paper considers the respective ‘value’ of archival materials that have often been categorized according to a hierarchy of ‘official’ and ‘found’.
Peter Spence teaches film theory on the BA Film and Media Production at Hallam, and is Course Leader of the MAC Department Foundation Year courses. He holds an MA Screen Arts (Producing and Directing) from Sheffield Hallam University and BA (Hons) Politics and History from Queen Mary University of London. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
