Wednesday 29 March 2017 – Lecture and workshop on ‘Wool, a national sustainable fibre’ featuring Lynn Wilson from Zero Waste Scotland
Speaker: Lynn Wilson (Zero Waste Scotland)
Title: Wool, a national sustainable fibre
Hosted by: Alison Gwilt and Jackie Leaver
Dr Alison Gwilt and Jackie Leaver host textile designer Lynn Wilson (Zero Waste Scotland) this Wednesday, with a lecture open to all researchers and students. Following the lecture there will also be a workshop.
Lynn has a textiles background and the focus of the day will be sustainability and the use of wool and other natural fibres in a range of design disciplines. The lecture is open to all of Art and Design but interested researchers/students should get in contact with Jackie Leaver at j [dot] t [dot] leaver [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk if they wish to attend the workshop.
Lynn is a textile designer who has worked in the third sector and education for the last 20 years. During that time she has developed textile programs in Botswana, product design courses with the Naro San women of the Kalahari Desert, and led the circular economy textiles strategy for Scotland as part of the pioneering Circular Economy team at Zero Waste Scotland.
In 2015 Lynn became a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellow and visited Japan, exploring circular economy and sustainable textile models. In this lecture Lynn presents a brief history of wool before discussing four contemporary case studies of wool products from the UK. After reflecting on other natural and synthetic fibres in a global context, Lynn explores the future of wool in a circular economy.
Lynn is currently the Sector Manager for ‘Manufacturing in the Circular Economy’ Team at Zero Waste Scotland and is a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the Arts and Engineering). Whilst Lynn’s background is in textiles she is very interested in the potential for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
