Somewhere Becoming Sea – Esther Johnson’s moving image work included in Film & Video Umbrella Hull 2017 (April – June)

Concrete blocks near the sea, with warning of coastal erosion

Esther Johnson‘s Hinterland (2002), and new commission Retreating the Line (2017), have been selected for Somewhere Becoming Sea curated by Film and Video Umbrella as part of Hull 2017 UK City of Culture.

5 April 2017 – 17 June 2017
Somewhere Becoming Sea
Humber Street Gallery, Hull HU1 1TU

Somewhere Becoming Sea reflects how expanses of water that divide countries are also channels that connect them. This exhibition of international artists’ work with the moving image takes a closer look at the ever-changing boundaries between land and sea, exploring Hull’s long-standing prominence as a gateway to the North Sea and beyond.

At a time when climate change threatens to blur boundaries further and bring far-reaching economic impact, the exhibition captures the sea’s elemental power and asks: is everywhere now Somewhere Becoming Sea?

Curated by Steven Bode.

There will also be a symposium Sounding The Sea held at Ferens Art Gallery and Hull University, that reflects on the Somewhere Becoming Sea exhibition themes.

15 June 2017 – Ferens Art Gallery, Hull HU1 3RA
16 June 2017 – Middleton Hall, Hull University HU6 7RX
