Academic Advising (AA)
Student Support Triangle (SP site) – Melissa Jacobi, Student Experience, Teaching and Learning (SETL), provides training and development for those undertaking the role of AA.
Aurora
Aurora: future * change * growth. Aurora is a leadership development initiative for all people who self-identify as women. The programme is run by Advance HE and brings together leadership experts and higher education institutions to take positive action to address the under-representation of women in leadership positions in the sector.
Course Leadership
Academic Development & Diversity (ADD) offer their Course Leadership development programme and induction workshops for staff who are looking to aspire to become a CL or enhance their CL skills.
External Examining (EE)
Academic Development & Diversity (ADD) offer their External Examining development programme and workshop for staff who are looking to enhance and develop their EE skills.
Hallam Aspire
The Hallam Aspire Programme (website) is a mentoring scheme to support our next generation of professors, especially those from under-represented groups. The scheme supports our ambition to improve diversity and to support talent within the institution. Hallam Aspire is eligible to staff who identify as having an under-represented protected characteristic (ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and disability).

PhD Scholarships Scheme
Are you an academic supervisor? Please consider applying for the following PhD scholarship. As part of the investments to enhance research capacity, capability, connectivity and culture, the University’s Executive Board has agreed to an increase in university-funded PhD scholarships. This brings the overall number of PhD students receiving a university scholarship to a steady state of around 200.
The Transforming Lives PhD Scholarships scheme will allocate PhD scholarships to academic supervisors who are successful in either (i) securing an eligible externally funded grant or contract, or (ii) developing an approved collaborative PhD project with an external partner. Module Evaluation
Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQs) (SP site) – Module evaluation is a comprehensive and systematic process to provide module leaders with anonymous feedback from the students studying their modules. Working with key stakeholders, with both academic and professional development colleagues, we bring you a host of staff development opportunities that support you to embed inclusive pedagogy and practice in order to enhance the student experience.
Cultural Calendar
HROD have developed this Cultural Calendar (SP site) to help raise awareness and celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our community at Sheffield Hallam University. It is also a practical tool which will help with planning meetings, exams or events when a portion of staff and students may be unavailable.
Degree Awarding Gap (DAG)
Academic Development & Diversity (ADD) are leading on various inclusive pedagogy and practice workstreams that aim to support staff in reducing the degree awarding gap. Here are some of our staff development opportunities:
- Supporting Minoritised Student Groups (SMSG) – the aim is to support College departments and the Doctoral School to develop new or sustain ongoing groups. In doing so, SMSG helps to create a community where racially minoritised students do not feel like the outsider, experience discrimination, and have a space where peers can support each other so they feel included.
- Equity Accomplice Programme – the aim is to create a development offer for staff that enables them to grow their capability to take the work forward in their own areas. The resource includes the content, a medium for delivery, and resources for facilitation with individuals or groups. This resource is designed to be developed and delivered in context, so case –based discussions need to be built with the staff and student groups who may use it.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
HROD and Academic Development & Diversity (ADD) new staff induction: co-delivery of the ‘Introduction to EDI at Hallam’. If you’re a new member of staff you should have attended this as part of your induction. If you’re not aware of this or indeed wish to have a refresher, visit The Core Portal system and book your place – search under EDI and look for course code NSEDI / Professional Development.

Student and Academic Services (SAS), Library Services provide development opportunities to learn how to use assistive technology tools.
Cyber Awareness
To protect the University and help staff defend themselves against online fraud, the University has invested in an online cyber awareness course (SP site) to highlight the risks in online activity and how we can deal with these.
Digital Accessibility
Digital Accessibility is creating content that can be easily understood and interacted with by as many people as possible. It closely links to the universities equality and diversity objectives and is a legislative requirement for all public sector bodies. The Introduction to Digital Accessibility module (SP site) provides an insight into the barriers caused by poor accessibility and a framework to help you apply best practice to your work.
Digital Essentials
The most established definition of Digital Capability is the one used by Jisc: Capabilities which support living, learning and working in a digital society. Communicating, finding information, shopping, tracking our health and solving problems are just some of the activities which are increasingly facilitated by digital tools. This is why our digital capabilities – the skills, knowledge and understanding which help us in our daily lives – are so important to us and also valued by employers. This course is hosted on Blackboard (log-in using your usual SHU credentials) under organisation sites (00-Z-S0381-20189).

Hallam has subscribed to it for a number of years, and all staff and current students have full access and use of it. LiL provides online material which can complement our teaching and staff development.

Brought to you by the Digital Skills Hub (DTS) (SP site), Microsoft Learning Pathways presents Microsoft developed learning resources to help people get the most out of Office 365 products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Note, One Drive and many more.

Academic Progression
- Lecturer (AC2) to Senior Lecturer (AC3) – HROD’s academic progression process (from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer) is led by the appropriate College/Directorate Manager.
- Applications for Professorship and Associate Professorship – the University has an annual application process for progression to Associate Professor (replacing Reader) and Professor.
Advance HE Fellowship via the TALENT Professional Recognition Scheme
Sheffield Hallam’s Transforming Lives strategy is driven by a set of priorities, including a focus on curriculum, teaching and learning and the student experience. Within this is a commitment to achieve ‘consistently excellent teaching’ and a high quality learning experience for all its students, with an expectation that all staff who teach them or support their learning can evidence a high level of teaching competence.
The Academic Development & Diversity Team’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement (TALENT) Framework aims to provide a range of opportunities for new and experienced Hallam staff (academic, professional services and research) and postgraduate research students to obtain Advance HE fellowship through a range of taught and CPD routes. All routes are aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) descriptors to support strategic development of practice across the institution. New academic staff should check if they are eligible to enrol for the Hallam Academic Award – a degree apprenticeship route which includes Advance HE fellowship upon completion of the relevant modules of the PgDip in Academic Practice.
National Teaching Fellows (NTF) Teaching Excellence

It’s purpose is to help support you adopting the best of current, new and developing technology.
- HROD – staff development – the Organisational Performance and Culture Team within HROD co-ordinate staff learning and development opportunities across the University including e-learning, courses and our management development programmes. There are a number of activities that staff can engage in.
