Compliant Learner Management

  • Scheme to Embed Essentials (SEE): Apprenticeship Course Leaders (ACLs) work with wider stakeholders in Department Professional Services and central directorates to ensure and facilitate implementation of key funding and quality compliance matters.  See Embedding Apprenticeship Essentials
  • Safeguarding and Wellbeing: The obligations and duty of care are the same for all our students at SHU.  The support for Apprentices must also factor in the work context.  Please watch this 15 minute Safeguarding and Wellbeing Training Video and refer to the slides to get the basics.  For more information and to escalate an apprenticeship Safeguarding issue you need the Apprenticeship Safeguarding Practice Note (Appendix 2 to record a safeguarding matter).
  • Induction: The SHU Apprenticeship Delivery Guide clarifies how the ACL and WBL Coach should work together to set out Apprenticeship Essentials during induction. ACLs must use the Apprenticeship-Induction-Slides-Jan-2022-v1-6 to adaptively to build on their own practice for their specific apprenticeship standard.  The first three slides provide more guidance on the resource.  There are also Video Guides to illustrate how each section is to be used.  The material is flexible, but the scope of induction should be comprehensive.
  • Starting Point Exercise:  During On-Boarding the WBL Coach introduces a Starting Point Exercise using a standard set of questions in a recording grid.  This is then accessed by the learner in AIIR. The initial module for Personal and Professional Development (reflective practice) should then timetable a mandatory starting activity to help individualise the curriculum, based on the Apprentice-Starting-Position-Teaching-Slides, VSept21 in the resources section of this TAE site. There is also an explanatory video to review there. Refreshing the Skill Scan to examine development from starting position should take place at each level of study, coordinated with the WBL Coach plans and MAYTAS tools available.  There is an alternative Development from Starting Position grid available for this.
  • Apprenticeship Attendance Monitoring (AAM): It is Mandatory for each Course team to take registers of attendance at taught sessions, to monitor individual and cohort engagement, following this guidance: Attendance Monitoring for Apprentices in JISC Sept21. The ACL and WBL Coach must use the data in monthly meetings to agree interventions. The Student role using Study Goal must be communicated at Induction (Study Goal QR & link slide) and continually pushed with module leaders to drive learner engagement. NEW: Apprenticeship Leads who chair Apprenticeship Departmental Operations Group (ADOG) must review Attendance patterns and compliance as part of the standing agenda. This Audit Guide for AAM will greatly support that role.
  • Progression: Understanding a learner’s starting position, their progress though their apprenticeship and readiness for End Point Assessment depends on much more than module grades. The credit attainment is a platform for wider development and SHU is accountable for all aspects of delivering an Apprenticeship. Therefore, progression through levels is accompanied by our evaluation of progress against developmental milestones for knowledge, skills and behaviours. Assessment Board (Apprenticeships) are in place for this reason – see this page and embedded video here.  Apprenticeship Leads should use the Guide to Auditing Apprenticeship Attendance Monitoring so that Apprenticeship Departmental Operations Groups can be used to 
  • End Point Assessment: It is crucial to see the Apprenticeship as a whole and the award as a part of the holistic Apprenticeship journey.  Supporting our Apprentices to be EPA ready is a joint responsibility between the Apprenticeship Course Leader and delivery team including the WBL Coach.  The Delivery Guide has more information on this.
