‘Yes We Can’ – Technicians showcase exhibition
The ‘Yes We Can’ exhibition is a showcase of Art and Design and Digital Media technicians’ own work.
Our exhibiting technicians are highly skilled people, with many of them having their own creative practice outside of their jobs. The work on show is as varied as the specialisms we cover within the workshops. Ceramics, jewellery, photography and printmaking are represented, plus a great deal more.
The aim of the show is to inspire the next generation of makers.
How can we help our students and researchers to utilise the workshops to become more ambitious, to learn new skills and to bring their designs into reality?
With an average of 17.5 years’ experience, the technical staff have a wealth of knowledge to tap into.
The title comes from the reply you will most commonly hear when talking to a technician, yes we can – help, guide, share, show, instruct, construct and of course fix it for you!
Technicians form an essential part of art and design education at Sheffield Hallam University. The team – who are artists, designers, engineers, makers and craftspeople in their own right – are experts in a range of making practices and they contribute their sustained experience of varied professional contexts.
As Course Leader for Fine Art, I see just how diverse the learning opportunities they make possible for students across a host of different media, as well as the considerable support they offer to academic staff for teaching and research. I love to hear about the work technicians do in the university context, but it is a real joy to find out more about the particular forms taken by their own practice.
This exhibition makes visible in one place the breadth of work going on amongst a talented group and signals just how important they are as members of our city’s creative community. – Jo Lee, Course Leader, Fine Art
