‘The Co-op Connection’ – Professor Esther Johnson produces book celebrating the connection between ‘SHIPS in the SKY’ and the Co-op Society
In celebration of the co-operative movement and the direct connection that Professor Esther Johnson‘s social history arts research SHIPS in the SKY has to the Co-op Society; Esther has produced a 44-page full-colour book published by The Modernist Society. The book brings together a selection of project donations associated with the former Hull Co-operative Society Central Premises, alongside an assortment of delightful CWS and Co-op ephemera through the ages.
Esther has undertaken extensive research in the Co-op Archives in Manchester so linking to the launch of this publication, the Co-operative Archive will undertake a @shipsinthesky63 instagram takeover for a week from Friday 26th November 2021.
Esther Johnson works at the intersection of artist moving image and documentary. Her poetic portraits focus on marginal worlds, revealing resonant stories that may otherwico-ose remain hidden or ignored. Work has been exhibited internationally in 40 countries, co-opand has also featured on television and radio. In 2012 Johnson won the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Performing and Visual Arts for young scholars. She is a Professor of Film & Media Art at Sheffield Hallam University.
