Researcher Blog by Susannah Gent of SOLAR: Walking at the Speed of Light #3 Next Steps
About the author
Susannah Gent is Senior Lecturer in Film & Media Production and a founder member of the Walking Arts Research Group in Media Arts.
In this post, as the SOLAR: Walking at the Speed of Light closes, Susannah looks to the future for the Media Arts Walking Research Group.
With the SIA exhibition closed the Media Arts Walking Research Group are considering their next steps.
The SOLAR app continues indefinitely for anyone wishing the walk the solar system at the speed of light from the sun in the Peace Gardens at Sheffield Town Hall to ‘Neptune’ at Woodlands Valley, Ladybower close to the Snake Pass in the Peak District. (The app is available by searching ‘Solar Sheffield’ on iOS and Android). The group is in discussion about a number of other places where the app and SOLAR project might travel next.
Influence of Mars, the short film by Susannah Gent, to be found at the Mars location (that’s somewhere near the Wetherspoons pub by Waitrose) has been accepted into the Hamburg International Short Film Festival next month. The festival is a British Council supported event and we will discuss the possibility of international events where the walking app could feature.
The walking group is discussing the prospect of a second group exhibition of the creative output during the walks over the past couple years. Artworks in film, photography, and digital media made in response to the environment promise a diverse show.
SOLAR was a commission for the CATALYST Festival of Creativity, Sheffield supported by the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University.
The app is available by searching ‘Solar Sheffield’ on iOS and Android.
