The Problem of Perspective is a series of screenings illuminating a distinctly northern perspective on the history of artists’ moving image in England. The project surveys an array of production strategies deployed by video artists and filmmakers across Yorkshire and the Humber, the North East and Cumbria from the ‘60s to the early 2000s.
This edition of the project includes an examination and revisiting of a 16mm experimental documentary film by artist Mark Fell originally made in 1992 at Sheffield City Polytechnic. Shot in the industrial landscape between Rotherham and Sheffield the film attempts to reconcile two ‘worlds’ – one based on his father’s memories of the declining local steel industry, the other on his young son’s fascination with superheros and toys. For this screening Fell has re-structured the film and appended it with a newly recorded dialogue with artist Sharon Kivland – his tutor during the original production. Following the screening Fell with be in conversation about the material.
