This book brings together twenty-three interviews with twenty-five artists who make publishing an artistic practice. In a context where artists’ publications arouse the interest of many actors in the field of art, it is a question of offering contemporary perspectives on this phenomenon, marked by a tension between the alternative positions and the research of institutional recognition.

The words of the solicited artists were thus collected with a triple aim.

First, draw a panorama of artists’ publications today. Then, to determine, among the tools which allowed thinking about the practice of the book of artists of these last decades, which remain operative to understand current manifestations. Finally, to identify the questions that seem specific to these recent events and questioning the nature of the evolutions they show in connection with a broader context of art and publishing.

Although current practices do not undermine the assumptions and arguments made to date about artists’ publications, these interviews suggest issues that are formulated differently and that lead to new attitudes.
