Esther Johnson to present ‘Abstractions of Holderness’ at Hull: City of Cinema on 26 March 2017

Abstractions of Holderness is an audio-visual work by Esther Johnson and Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs inspired by Basil Kirchin’s 1970s residency in East Yorkshire. Kirchin, an English drummer and composer, is known as a pioneer of musique concrète and has been described by Brian Eno as, “a founding father of ambient”.

Hull: City of Cinema is a three day event celebrating Hull’s filmmakers, television makers and cinemas, past, present and future.

Abstractions of Holderness will be introduced by Esther and presented at 1.10PM preceding The Problem of Perspective, a series of screenings illuminating a distinctly northern perspective on the history of artists’ moving image in England. Esther will also be on a panel with current practitioners in the screen industry (from production to exhibition) in Yorkshire sharing their insights about career paths in the industry and the future of screen in Hull/East Yorkshire/Yorkshire.

Professor Esther Johnson is an artist and filmmaker working at the intersection of artist moving image and documentary portraiture. She is Professor of Film and Media Arts at Sheffield Hallam University.
