Oracle have altered the licensing model for Java which means that from January 2019 the University would have to purchase a license for every workstation that has Oracle Java installed which was released after the version Java 8 update 201.
This would be an extorniate cost for the University, so the decision has been taken to remove Oracle Java in a phased rollout from all SHU workstations and to replace it with Amazon Corretto, which is a free Java JDK.
This rollout has begun with the staff MD10 Office rollout that are part of the Early Adopters rollout.
Leaving workstations using version 8 Update 201 is not an option due to security flaws that would not be resolved if updated versions are not installed.
