New filestores for teaching materials and research data

To address the increasing need for space to store files for teaching and research, IS&T has provided two new storage areas for the University:

  • a teaching materials filestore which will be available to all academic staff
  • a research data store which will be available to researchers in the University

The Teaching Materials filestore has a total of 30TB of storage space for written documents, images, video and audio. This is a secure area to store your files and will be backed up regularly.

You will have your own folder in the filestore (on the N: drive, organised according to faculty) which only you will be able to write to. The filestore will be readable by other teaching staff in the University which will make it easy for you to share teaching materials effectively with other staff while ensuring no one else can amend or delete content you create.

A shortcut has also been set up which you will find in your F:drive (sometimes known as the home drive) with the title ‘Teaching Materials’.  This will allow you to find your folder easily – although you can also look for it by browsing the ‘Teaching Materials’ folder on the N: drive for your folder which is named with your University user code.

The Research Data filestore will provide 10TB of storage for data and supporting material for research projects which are in progress. It will be a secure area to store your files and will be backed up regularly.

The storage area will be on the Q: drive and will be made available to all staff and students engaged in research but you will only see the folders which you are given access to. Folders will be set up for each research group and will only be viewable and writeable by those in the group. This might include individuals external to the University.

All files will be backed up every night to a remote location. As research projects close, they will need to be moved off this filestore and archived to ensure enough space is available for future projects.
