SHU at Pride and important updates from EDI and Signal - the staff LGBT+ network

Pride

Even the rain couldn’t stop us having a great time at Sheffield Pride! We marched, we compèred the main stage and we met hundreds of community members to talk about what a great place SHU is to work and study at.

Pride in numbers

We gave away 100 SHU bags, 20 SHU prospectuses and 50 Team Hallam baseball caps.

We also had a snapchat takeover with 651 unique views and 30 colleagues marched with a 6 foot rainbow SHU banner

A big well done and thank you to everyone involved and to our very own Signal Co-Chair James Laley for superbly compèring the main stage all day to over 700 people!

All of these numbers were for one very good reason – LGBT+ equality!

Signal is looking for new members

Signal is the SHU LGBT+ staff network and supports the University in its mission to be LGBT+ inclusive. We want to make sure that Signal is as diverse and representative as possible and we are particularly inviting LGBT+ colleagues with multiple identities such as people of faith, people with disabilities or BAME people to get involved. Please email LGBT@shu.ac.uk

Did you know that the University uses Signal to consult with LGBT+ colleagues? Signal has recently helped the University to make its policy more LGBT+ inclusive, including family-friendly policies relating to Adoption, Maternity, Paternity and Shared Parental Leave.

Stonewall survey – all colleagues are invited to complete

The University works with Stonewall, the UK’s leading LGBT+ rights charity and this year, to ensure we are creating an LGBT+ inclusive workplace for our colleagues, we are entering the annual Workplace Equality Index. This uses criteria to assess how inclusive we are. As part of this we are asking our colleagues to complete a short (5 minute) survey about their experiences. You can identify as LGBT+ or straight to take part in the survey.

Please follow this link www.stonewall.org.uk/index-survey-2019 and enter code 1550. This code is to recognise your answers as from SHU and is not a personal identifier.

Your chance to volunteer at 2018 Graduation

Information from the Graduation Office on this years ceremony and how you can get involved and help out.

Our 2018 UK Graduation ceremonies will take place at Sheffield City Hall from Monday 12 to Friday 23 November.

Graduation is a memorable celebration. It is the culmination of our students’ journeys, although hopefully not the end of their association with us, and recognition of the important role so many staff from across the University play in supporting those students.

Directorate staff are invited to get involved too by volunteering as door stewards at one or more of the morning, afternoon or evening ceremonies.

If you are interested in giving a few hours of your time during this important fortnight in the University’s calendar, please sign up as soon as possible via the graduation SharePoint site. The faculty staff responsible for organising roles will be in touch to confirm your allocation.

If you want to work at a particular ceremony, please visit the graduation website where you can search for which specific courses are being celebrated on which days.

If you have any questions, please contact the Graduation Office on 0114 225 5353 or email graduation@shu.ac.uk  You can also keep up to date with all the latest news and information by subscribing to the Graduation blog.

Successful staff applicants to begin Leadership and Management Apprenticeships in Autumn

Eighteen members of staff have been successful in gaining a place on our Leadership and Management Apprenticeships scheme, delivered at Sheffield Business School.

Open to staff in management roles (both academic and professional services colleagues), staff from grades 5 to SSG applied for a fully-funded place on the following programmes:

The 31 applications received were scored by panels of senior staff on the impact attending the relevant Programme would have on the individual’s performance, that of their business area and the University’s delivery of Transforming Lives.

The panels including ULT members, Heads of Departments, Directors and course leaders, with the 18 highest-scoring offered a place. Successful colleagues will start their programmes in the autumn and, in accordance with the rules for apprenticeships, will spend 20% of their working time dedicated to off-the-job training.

The launch of the Leadership and Management Apprenticeships complements the other elements of SHU’s development offer, including Hallam Leaders, Headstart, the recently-launched Senior Strategic Leadership Programme and the Professional Services Development Programme.

We anticipate that we will run the same scheme next year, launching applications in May.
