Amelia Knowlson, our ADRC Heritage Consortium doctoral student, has been examining the use of 3D printing as a curatorial tool for the Stories from the East: The Grice Ivories exhibition by Museums Sheffield.  Amelia’s exploratory work, which uses the 3D scanning process as a tool of articulation and seeing afresh, is integrated directly into this prestigious show.

Stories from the East presents Dr John Grice’s collection of hand-carved ivories and looks at the tales, figures and traditions that inspired them. The exhibition also explores how some of the UK’s finest examples of Chinese craftsmanship came to Sheffield in 1930s as well as the history and impact of the ivory trade. Amelia’s work with these extraordinary objects highlights their beauty whilst revealing them to be both politically and environmentally charged.

Stories from the East runs from Saturday 11 March 2017 until Sunday 9 July 2017. For more information on the exhibition visit the Museums Sheffield website.
