Title: Medic of the Future: Exploring the integration of immersive Virtual Reality with haptic and tactile feedback in a medical training environment for the MoD
Speakers: CCRC’s Heath Reed, Ivan Phelan and Shirley Lindley

We will outline how the different elements of this type of training was integrated into a virtual environment using haptic technology developed at SHU.

We used an Oculus Rift headset, complimented with additional hardware including Microsoft’s Kinect to develop an immersive experience. The devices were connected through the Unity game engine to create fast prototyping and facilitate cross platform development.

The haptic devices went through several iterations to provide sensations of pressure and vibration to mimic the experiences seen in the virtual world i.e. a surgeon placing a hand inside an open abdomen and feeling the organs inside.

We will explore a future roadmap using the latest released technology and further MoD funding to develop the system to the next stage.
