Case Study: Building a community with webinars

In this case study a tutor from D&S shares her experience of using Blackboard Collaborate to deliver teaching sessions and to provide a social space for her students.  The distance learning course attracts students from several countries and as well as finding a method of delivery that reduced the amount of times students had to travel to a campus she also wanted to create a course community.

Having used other webinar tools with some success the tutor decided to try Blackboard Collaborate because its an intuative tool and it provides greater functionality than those used previously, particularly with respect to group work and recording the sessions.   As well as being used to deliver teaching, the tutor left sessions open at all times so that it was available for students to engage in discussion and get to know each other.

There was a high level of participation in the sessions and students said the felt connected with the rest of the cohort despite not being in the same physical space. You can read more about this approach by reading the two-page case study entitled: Building a community with webinars.  If you are willing to share your experiences in teaching online in a similar case study, please contact us through the Suggestions link.
