Bringing Together the T and E of STEAM in Early Childhood Education: Robot Programming as an Approach

Educational smart devices such as programmable robotics provide children with a playful learning experience to optimize their development in cognitive and physical abilities, social skills and emotional well-being. Across the globe, educational policy and curricula have led to a focus on the role of computing education in promoting early childhood learning and development. Dr Weipeng Yang will share the theoretical and empirical underpinnings for developing a story-inspired robot programming (SIRP) curriculum for young children. These key considerations altogether present an innovative pedagogical approach to STEAM education in early childhood. This pedagogical approach will inform a new way to engage young children in quality STEM/ STEAM education and understanding the digital world.

Dr. Weipeng Yang ( is an Assistant Professor at the Education University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. He specializes in early childhood curriculum and pedagogy, with a focus on STEAM education, computational thinking, and sociocultural effects. Dr. Yang serves as an Editor of the Journal of Research in Childhood Education (JRCE) and an Associate Editor of the Journal for the Study of Education and Development. He is the Founder of the Early Childhood Learning Sciences (ECLS) Lab. He is also a British Curriculum Forum Steering Group Member, and Curriculum, Assessment and Pedagogy SIG Convenor at British Educational Research Association and serves on several editorial boards, including Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Early Education and Development, The Curriculum Journal, ECNU Review of Education, and SN Social Sciences.
