This week we are looking at how we are working to achieve significant savings on controllable non-pay spend in areas such as printing.
The University spends £1.1m a year on direct, non-pay printing costs for our fleet of printers, the print shop and with external suppliers.
In October 2018, we introduced the Print Policy which directed staff to use our own internal services via Print Shop; asked staff remove non-essential desktop printers and use their local multi-functional devices; printed in black and white rather than colour and explored the Sheffield Business School-adopted policy of providing course guides online only.
This work has led to a £70k reduction in printing costs but this needs to continue if we are to meet our £4million savings target. Whilst we are making good progress, we continue to welcome cost-saving suggestions or examples of how staff are making their own contribution.
