Exciting new Commonwealth scholarship opportunities in Singapore

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is offering four fully-funded Commonwealth PhD Scholarships – find out how to apply for this exciting opportunity!

This great opportunity is designed to nurture future leaders, with an emphasis on those interested in science and engineering. Four scholarships are available in any research specialism offered by NTU – you will not only have a fully-funded scholarship, but also benefit from international experience and cross-cultural exchange when studying and researching abroad.

Eligibility and how to apply

  • Citizens of any Commonwealth country are eligible to apply, excluding Singapore citizens and Singapore permanent residents
  • The scholarships fund full tuition fees, a living allowance of 2000 Singapore dollars per month and a resettlement & airfare grant of 2500 Singapore dollars.
  • Applications are open now and close on 31 January 2018. The scholarship start date will be August 2018.

Applicants must complete the online NTU graduate research programme application and indicate on the form that they also wish to apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship. Applications should be made via the NTU website.

Join us for a trip to Sheffield’s biggest park!

There is plenty for you to visit and explore, including formal gardens, a rare breeds farm, ancient woodland, a cafe and more.

We will take the bus there so please bring £4 for a return bus ticket. You must register your interest with us here before the trip.

Meet our student crew at the Main University entrance,  Level 5 Owen building on Sunday 8 October at 10am, returning around 2pm.

Farewell to our TAR UC students

At the beginning of September, we said good luck and farewell to our fantastic TAR UC students from Malaysia!

This summer, we welcomed 160 students to our summer school programme in Sheffield Hallam University, and helped to show them the sights and culture that can be found in the UK.

We visited historic and scenic places such as Cambridge and Whitby, as well as the world-famous Manchester United football team.

We hope that the students that came and visited us had a great time, and we wish you the best of luck for the future – we hope you will remember your time in Sheffield!

Visit a picturesque village in the heart of the Peak District with a guided tour led by Friends of Bamford Station.

They will show you local attractions and beautiful countryside landscapes. Bring your camera to capture the stunning scenery and wear comfortable shoes for walking.

How well can you judge your own performance in tasks? – Research opportunity

My name is Derek Burns; I am a Doctoral Researcher in Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University. As part of my PhD, I am currently asking for participants to take part in a study looking at students’ ability to monitor their knowledge and performance on language and problem solving tasks, in UK and East Asian international students (e.g. Chinese, Taiwanese, Malaysian, Hong Kong and Vietnamese).

This is a great chance to be part of and experience research in the UK. It is also hoped findings from my research may help guide teaching practices in relation to both UK and international students.

Requirements

  • All participants must be over the age of 18 and a student at Sheffield Hallam University.
  • Participants must either be originally from the UK OR an international student from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan or Vietnam.

What do you do?

As a participant you will do the following

  • Complete two short self-report measures of metacognition (Thinking about thinking) and a questionnaire looking at the reasons why you attend university.
  • You will be asked if you know the meaning of 44 English words.
  • Complete 30 problem-solving tasks involving recognising patterns, these tasks will vary in difficulty. Each task will require you to identify a missing part of a pattern from the options provided.
  • Answer 44 multiple-choice English language questions.
  • For each question, in the problem solving and language task, you will be asked how confident you are in your answer. Further questions will ask how many questions you believe you answered correctly on both tasks.
  • Give permission to the researcher to access your grades at the university
  • Should not take longer than 60 minutes

Is your visa due to expire soon?

If you do not book a one-to-one appointment to see an immigration adviser at least 2 weeks before your visa is due to expire, then we may not be able to assist you with your application and you will have to send your documents off yourself.

You must attend a visa eligibility appointment before you can book a one-to-one appointment.

It is important that you attend a visa eligibility appointment at least two months before your visa is due to expire. You will be unable to get a CAS application form if you have not attended this appointment.
