Hallam Deal – latest update including drop ins

Below is the latest in a series of regular updates from HROD relating to progress and actions that are part of the Hallam Deal.

Our commitments as part of the Hallam Deal relate to the environment and culture we want to create for our staff whilst making it clear what we expect in return to become the world’s leading applied university. We said we would provide you with regular updates on progress and detailed below are some key pieces of work that we have delivered in support of the deal.

What’s new this month?

Working togetherRespect our people and treat each other fairly:

  • We have recently carried out a review of our policy on Stress at Work, this has been driven by our commitment under the Hallam Deal, to create a positive culture with a focus on staff engagement and wellbeing.  The new policy was approved at a recent meeting of the University Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee and is available here. The policy includes a new stress risk assessment form and reinforces the need to proactively manage the potential causes of stress in the workplace. The launch of this policy is supported by a new ‘Managing Stress in the Workplace’ course for managers. This may be booked on via Core Portal – follow the link to Core Portal, login and then click on training and search ‘stress’, the course should appear in the results below. Click on the green + to see  a list of the available dates and choose one to book).

For more information, please visit the staff wellbeing site which contains information regarding on-going support that is available at the university all year             round.

  • As a reminder, staff will not be able to chair recruitment and selection activity (i.e. shortlisting, interviewing and making appointments) without first completing the university’s new ‘Chairs of Panels – Recruitment & Selection’ training. Completing this training is a mandatory requirement. Sessions are now available to book on via Core Portal. If you require any further information please contact the People Development Team on extension 3948.

The opportunity – There will be opportunities for you to achieve your potential:

  • Professional Services Performance & Development Review – The University’s new Performance and Development Review (PDR), which replaces all existing professional service appraisal processes across faculties and directorates was launched on the 1st Using a single process aims to bring a consistent experience for all staff (academic and professional services) across the University. Sheffield Hallam University is a desirable place to pursue a career; our aspiration to become the world’s leading applied University and as such we should offer developmental opportunities for its staff, and set high expectations about performance.  As part of the Hallam Deal  we want to ensure that you have a meaningful PDR conversation that recognises your achievements and sets clear and appropriate objectives. To access the Performance and Development Review Toolkit please click here. Briefings have been scheduled for all professional services staff, to provide you with an overview of the new PDR and how to get the most out of your review discussion as well as how to apply the professional services capabilities framework.  Further details on how to book onto the sessions can be found here If you have any questions please contact Kelly Cookson, Human Resources Manager – Strategic Projects on ext. 6160.
  •  Additional lunchtime open sessions – Following the popularity of the Open sessions on the Career and Development Offer for Professional Services, we have added two further dates.

These are one hour sessions for SHU Professional Services staff at all levels to find out more about our plans for career conversations, career pathways, talent management, development moves and agile resourcing and to feed in your views.

Please note, unfortunately we will not be able to answer questions about consultation for the new Professional Services Operating model at these sessions, which will focus solely on the career and development offer.
