Off the Shelf Festival of Words

Off the Shelf has grown into one of the largest literary festivals in the UK, attracting some of the best-known names in literature and media to Sheffield each year. The festival programme is wide-ranging and offers over 200 events for all ages.

The festival runs from 7 – 28 October at venues across the city with a variety of events for all age groups.  Forthcoming events include:

Andy Cave – 8 October
Hear Andy talk about his adventures in Patagonia, Alaska, the Himalayas and beyond.

The Nix and American War – 8 October
This acclaimed novel explores mother and son relationships, love, betrayal, politics and pop culture. American War is a powerful debut novel about a second American Civil War, plague, devastating policies and one family caught deep in the middle.

One for the Road – 12 October
Acclaimed Sheffield poet Helen Mort and BBC Radio 6 Music presenter and author Stuart Maconie have compiled an anthology of contemporary poems creating everyone’s ideal pub crawl.

Clinton Woods – 12 October
A first-hand account from a Sheffield sporting legend. Former world light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods tells his gripping life story, laying bare the culture that surrounds his sport.

Lighting the Furnace – 13 October
As Chair of the Sheffield Development Corporation, he oversaw the major regeneration of the city’s East End, which was left decimated by the decline in the steel industry. Knighted for this, and his extensive charity work, hear Sir Hugh talk candidly about his inspirational journey.

Lee Child – 13 October
Lee Child is one of the world’s leading thriller writers, whose books regularly feature at the number one slot worldwide. It’s said that one of his novels featuring hero Jack Reacher sells somewhere in the world every nine seconds.

Windblown – 15 October
It’s 30 years to the day since the Great Storm of 1987 battered the UK – an event that lives on in the collective memory. Tamsin’s book was sparked by a discovery that her father had created a mural at Kew Gardens of fallen storm trees. She discovered more about the storm – how it altered lives as well as the landscape.

Mick Herron – 15 October
His work has been included in the Best 101 Crime Novels of the Decade, Twenty Greatest Spy Novels of all Time and Best 25 Crime Novels of the Past Five Years. A master of plotting and dialogue, hear Mick discuss his work.
