Maximum duration regulation (Regulation 1 in Standard Assessment Regulations)

Change effective from:

2016/17

Summary of change

The Standard Assessment Regulations for 2016/17 now include maximum durations for undergraduate courses. Maximum durations for postgraduate courses are revised to align with undergraduate maximum durations and to simplify the regulation.

It is clarified that the purpose of Regulation 1 is to explain the normal award duration and the maximum duration which can be taken by students who require additional time to retrieve failure or for approved break in study/extenuating circumstances.

Remember that once a student has reached the maximum duration, it doesn’t mean that they necessarily have to leave the University. Students can apply (through the normal Admissions process) to join a course and use Recognised Prior Learning where appropriate.

What’s different?

  • Academic staff and Professional Services staff need to be aware of this change when advising students about regulatory issues.
