Personal safety advice

As you are aware the dark nights are upon us and the bad weather isn’t too far behind. The University takes all reasonable steps to ensure that the car parks are well lit and that the internal roadways and walkways are gritted in icy weather.  To assist us can you please report any icy patches or lights out to the Facilities Help Desk on 4444.

Unfortunately we do not have this control externally.  With this is mind we all need to take extra care and the following advice is given so you can look after your own health and safety:

When walking:

  • Wear sensible shoes to work when the weather is bad.
  • Walk on designated pathways where available.
  • Keep to busy, well lit areas.
  • Avoid alleyways, subways or poorly lit streets.
  • Do not take short cuts, unless you know they are safe.
  • Walk in pairs rather than on your own.
  • Wear clothing with reflective strips on, so you can be seen easily.

When driving:

  • Observe the speed limit in the car parks and drive carefully.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • As a driver, give way to pedestrians.
  • Use main roads where possible.
  • When driving alone, keep the doors locked.
  • Park in a well lit, busy area.
  • When leaving your car, place all belongings out of sight.
  • Do not use a mobile phone whilst driving.  Set your phone up to take messages.  The phone should only be used in an emergency.
  • Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol.
  • Don’t drive when you are tired, take a break, especially when driving long distances.
  • Exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times.
